A new AI-PROGNOSIS-related open-access publication has been published in the Journal of Parkinson’s Disease
The article, titled “ChatGPT knows my Parkinson’s”: Perspectives of people with Parkinson’s disease on use of generative AI, explores how people with Parkinson’s disease use generative AI tools such as ChatGPT for disease-related questions and self-management.
The study was based on an online survey of 149 people with Parkinson’s disease across 19 countries. It found that 65% of respondents had used generative AI, and 40% of those had used it for Parkinson’s disease-specific inquiries. ChatGPT was the most commonly used tool among respondents.
The findings show that people with Parkinson’s disease used generative AI in three main ways: to access and understand information, to interpret symptoms and health data, and to prepare for clinical appointments or self-management goals. Non-users cited reasons such as unfamiliarity with the tools, lack of perceived need, and concerns about accuracy, privacy and trustworthiness.
The article also highlights the need to critically evaluate AI-generated information and to support safe, transparent discussions between patients and clinicians about the use of generative AI in healthcare.
The publication draws on questions from the AI-PROGNOSIS project survey on user needs across different AI applications for Parkinson’s disease management.
